Thinking that daytime impairments are due to poor sleep may feed into a self-fulfilling prophesy. Fatigue, lowered energy, lowered performance, and mood disturbances are some of the symptoms blamed on poor sleep. Sometimes this is true, but there are a variety of alternative factors that must be assessed such as natural circadian changes, medical problems, stress in other areas of life, and poor coping styles.
This is hard to admit, of course, because if a person is used to blaming feeling tired and washed out on sleep problems then its very hard to think that it may actually be linked to other things. Especially since after a long enough time, chances are there are sleep problems and it starts looking more like a tangled knot that an easy problem to solve. Thats why its useful to have a look at many factors when evaluating a sleep problem.
