The way Sleep Disorders are diagnosed is to spend a night in a sleep laboratory. Because there are reliable signs through brain waves and behaviors when asleep, a night in a sleep lab is essential for most sleep disorder diagnoses. In order to be evaluated in a sleep lab, you should call your physician and ask for a referral to one in your area. Most sleep labs require a referral from your usual doctor, however there may be some that schedule evaluations independently - you can always call one in your area and find out. Once you have made your appointment, they will give you complete instructions on the tests they will do and what is required of you.
Ive found sleep lab personnel to be quite upbeat, they tell me that its usually rewarding to work there because so many of the sleep disorders can be treated and the people feel so much better once theyve started treatment.
